Stanford University adds nearly 8 Division I and eight Division II programs

Stanford University announced plans Friday to reverse its athletic curbs by adding eight Division I and eight Division II programs that once included 150 undergraduates.

“We are thrilled to be adding nearly eight college athletics programs to our university’s future,” said president John Hennessy. “College sports have improved in recent years, and this expansion of athletic programs will help ensure that our students can still have the best programs and the best opportunities to reach their potential.”

Stanford’s announcement comes the same day that it postponed the start of a gruelling Pac-12 Conference championship game Saturday, because of a fractured right wrist sustained by fifth-year linebacker Jordan Richards.

It also comes after sports cutbacks across the country earlier this year, including NCAA funding cuts that require universities to boost athletics spending by 10 percent.

Stanford’s four new football teams will include Stanford School of Business—which traditionally has featured a team in the NCAA’s top 10—the Cardinal Honors College and the women’s tennis team.
